Household view
The 2023 Survey of Financial Security covers all 10 provinces.
Compared with households led by someone age 35 to 44.
Before-tax wages, salaries, and commissions. Self-employment income is not included in the cited wage series.
Bank accounts, TFSA, RRSP, pensions, and other investments.
Current home value minus the mortgage balance.
Vehicles, business equity, valuables, and other property.
Student loans, credit cards, and non-mortgage debt.
What should I include?

Use what your household owns today, less what it owes today.

  • Include registered and non-registered investments, cash, property equity, pensions, vehicles, and business equity.
  • Home equity already subtracts the mortgage. Enter other loans, credit cards, and lines of credit under other debts; do not subtract that mortgage again.
  • Do not include annual income in these net worth fields or use the full value of a home without also subtracting its mortgage.

All values are CAD. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or tied to an account.

44th national percentile

Illustration, not a measured rank. This model mixes Statistics Canada’s 2023 medians with PBO’s Q4 2024 wealth thresholds and AF assumptions. It does not adjust different years to a common date. Bands are rounded to five percentile points and are not confidence intervals. See the data and assumptions.

Explore a constant-dollar scenario using a real return after inflation. It is a planning illustration, not a market forecast.

4% is the assumed annual return after inflation.

The scenario applies one return to total net worth and assumes additions are made at year-end. Real life includes taxes, housing changes, fees, and uneven returns.

Optional charts show how different assumptions change a comparison. Published medians are distinguished from AF’s illustrative curves and distributions. These charts do not measure your financial wellbeing.

This changes the chart readouts only. Your calculator age remains unchanged.

How the income curves are estimated

Only the 2023 age-band wage medians are published values. AF multiplies those medians by assumed ratios to draw the other percentile lines, then scales them by provincial median wages. Those lines are illustrations, not measured income percentiles.

How this chart is estimated

The lines scale national percentile thresholds using the five published age-group medians, with simple interpolation between groups. Province selection applies the same median adjustment used elsewhere on this page. It is a smooth planning view, not single-age survey data.

About this composition

AF chose these component shares and totals as a fictional teaching illustration. They are not measured median income components or a published single-age breakdown.

About this composition

Age-group net-worth medians come from the 2023 SFS. AF chose the component shares and debt amounts as teaching assumptions; the resulting composition is not a published household profile.

AF illustration: assumed distribution shape and percentile ratios, not tax records.

Employment income distribution

Age and province-adjusted estimate

Estimated employment income distribution with a marker for the entered income.

How the distribution is estimated

A smooth log-normal curve is fitted around the selected age and province median. It illustrates skew and percentile position; it is not a count of individual tax records.

AF illustration: synthesized distribution, including assumed low-end anchors.

Net worth distribution

Household percentile model

Estimated household net worth distribution with a marker for the calculator result.

How the distribution is estimated

AF constructs these bars from the mixed-source wealth curve, including two assumed low-end anchors, then scales it by age and province medians. They are not counts of observed families.

Median income by province

Official 2023 median wages with estimated 10th-90th ranges

Median annual wages by Canadian province with estimated percentile ranges.

About the province ranges

Median dots are official annual wages, salaries, and commissions. Whiskers use the same estimated national percentile ratios as the income-age chart.

AF illustration: scaled 2023 medians and assumed ranges; not a forecast.

Target-age net worth by province

Estimated household range at age 65

Estimated median household net worth by province at the selected target age with percentile ranges.

How target-age ranges are estimated

Each province's 2023 median is combined with the selected target-age median and national percentile ratios. This is a comparison benchmark, not a forecast of provincial markets.

What this comparison can and cannot show

Official age-by-sex medians include full-time, part-time, full-year, and part-year wage earners. The chart describes group medians and does not explain differences in hours, occupation, experience, or caregiving.

Important interpretation note

Each point pairs separate median wage and family net worth series for the same age. It does not follow the same households over time and does not imply that income alone caused the wealth shown.

Use the number well

A rank is context, not a verdict.

01

Compare like with like

Age, home ownership, family size, pensions, and regional housing costs can move net worth dramatically. Start with your age-peer view before drawing conclusions.

02

Watch the direction

A rising net worth over several years is usually more useful than a single percentile. Track assets and debts consistently, using the same definitions each time.

03

Focus on controllables

Debt reduction, an emergency reserve, regular investing, and avoiding concentrated bets matter more than chasing somebody else's rank.

Data, method, and important limitations

Published inputs: Statistics Canada’s 2023 Survey of Financial Security medians (released October 29, 2024), its 2023 wage medians (released April 1, 2025), and PBO’s Q4 2024 wealth thresholds in Table 4 of its September 11, 2025 report. The $519,700 national net-worth median is in 2023 dollars. PBO’s $1.3M, $2.1M and $7.5M top-20%, top-10% and top-1% thresholds describe Q4 2024. These different dates are not inflation-normalized here.

AF assumptions: −$100,000 at the 5th percentile and $0 at the 15th are illustrative low-end anchors, not published survey points. Income percentile factors (0.35, 0.59, 0.78, 1, 1.42, 2 and 3.4 times the median), composition shares, debt paths and distribution shapes are chosen examples. Interpolating medians or scaling a national curve by a provincial median does not establish a real local distribution. Wealth refers to family units; wages refer to individual tax filers.

  • Model bands are rounded to five percentile points; this is display rounding, not statistical precision or an uncertainty interval.
  • Sources and model labels checked October 20, 2026. No 2026 survey rank is claimed.
  • Negative net worth is supported.
  • Territories are excluded because the cited SFS provincial table covers the 10 provinces.
  • The future scenario uses today's dollars and does not model tax, fees, or volatility.
